Banquet Night

&

The 5-Club Challenge

September 19, 2020

I think we managed to get the season in just in time, as the weather is starting to turn more fall-like.  There was a decided chill in the air last night, and the, at times seemingly gale-force, winds didn’t help much.  Otherwise, despite the best efforts of Covid, we got it all in.

Once again, the 5-club format proved interesting, as some players chose more wisely than others.   Congratulations to both winners, Steve Lockwood and Tim! As a group, we had 4 net eagles, 2 from each flight, and one actual eagle by Jim, holing out with his 8-iron at the 4th hole, from an undetermined yardage.  Unseen from the fairway due to the shadows on the green, it wasn’t until we all reached the green that we realized what had happened.  It has been a long time since we’ve had an eagle scored in the league, at least in match-play.  Looking back through 2008, there are none recorded.  Nicely done Jim!

There were: 33 net birdies, 12 in the A-flight and a whopping 21 in the B-flight;  59 pars, 36 for the A’s and 23 for the B’s;  17 bogeys recorded by each flight leaving 5 others for the A-flight and 9 for the B-flight.

The B-flight edged out the A-flight 135 total points to 134, and, as with last year, the winner in the B-flight, Tim, chose the wisest among us all, and would have come in first place had we not been playing in flights, with his total 22 points.

I’m thinking that maybe next year we make this a team event, pairing A and B players together, and combining their Stableford scores for a team total… We could pair in advance, or, do a blind draw of cards after the round.  Sound like fun? Hmmm?

If you’ve been following the “Virtual” round scores, here are the results for lowest/highest virtual round.  This takes a player’s best score from every hole played during the season and combines them into their BEST 18-hole score.  As you can see there can be quite a differential.  Jim had the best “best” score, with a tidy 9-under par 62! Time for the tour Jim! Marty and Mark had the lowest differentials, and tied for the lowest “worst” score of 94, the only scores under 100.
