Great weather for a round! Not nearly as humid as we expected I think, as the clouds helped keep it a little cooler as well. The playing conditions led to improved play as there were 8 handicap changes following tonight’s round, 5 of which were for the better this time.
With just one exception, the matches were all very close, with 2 matches resulting in ties, and 5 matches going 5 ˝ - 3 ˝. Shooting his handicap, Dave took full advantage of Pete’s struggles, with a 7-2 victory plus the bonus, for 8 full points. This moved Dave from 10th place to just outside of the top-5 in the standings.
In the 5 ˝ - 3 ˝ matches, Jim and Bette got their match to all square thru 6 holes, then Jim put it away as he went on to finish with the low gross on the night.
The “Battle of the Susans” was tied up thru the first 3 holes, then Sue took the next 3 to guarantee at least the tie. Susan wasn’t done though, as she fought back taking the next 2 holes, only to miss out on the tie, as she lost the last hole. Well fought ladies!
In a recurring matchup that has now spanned 4, count ‘em, 4 DECADES, Bob and Tom clawed their way thru what seems like a record 7 tied holes, on the way to the victory by Bob, handing Tommy his first loss of the season. I guess it takes an old hacker to beat an old hacker 😊
The brothers Fusco found themselves on the short end of their matches with Grace and Tim. Dan and Grace were tied up thru the first 5 holes, as Grace then went on a 3-0 run to clinch the match. Meanwhile, Tim never let Steve into the match, as he led straight out of the gate. Maybe they gave the family-mojo to Jim, knowing he would need it against Bette?
In the tied matches, Steve L and Andy were all square thru a back-and-forth 6 holes. Andy guaranteed the tie at the 8th hole, but couldn’t muster the win, needing to match Steve’s par at the final hole, he fell far short…
And finally, we have the marquee matchup of Mark and Marty, and what a slugfest it was, as Marty fired the first salvo, taking the first hole. Mark fired right back on the second, leading to a run of 4 tied holes in the middle of the match. Then Marty fired again at the 7th, only to be answered once again by Mark at the 8th. The match fittingly ended with a tie at the final hole. A 2-point swing in Marty’s favor, birdie-to-bogey, on the par 5 16th is all that kept them from splitting the bonus point too. Great matchup guys!
As predicted last week, Andy was the next to have his “other” bubble burst, and in a truly heartbreaking way as well. Sitting at 1-over par coming to the 18th hole, he proceeded to hook his tee-shot into, yes, into, the pond on the par-3 15th. The quad that followed should qualify as a “double-other”…. This leaves Mark, Marty and Dan, still in the running for the other” title. Marty and Steve Lockwood remain as the only players without a loss.
There was a little shuffling at the top, as Tommy regained the top spot, nudging Marty down into 2nd. Steve Lockwood and Bob made the biggest upward moves, from 8th and 9th to 3rd and 4th, respectively. Meanwhile Jim moved one spot up into 5th place, as Tim, Steve Fusco and Bette dropped out of the top 5.
39– Jim
40 – Marty
41– Mark, Andy
33 – Bob, Steve Lockwood
34 – Jim
35 – Tom
There were 5 birdies out there tonight, with par-5 16th being the most generous, giving up 3.
#14 – Andy
#15 – Tim
#16 – Jim, Marty, Andy
No winner tonight
