Despite the threat of a little spritz at the beginning, the weather was in a cooperative mood, keeping temps a bit cooler and no humidity. Handicaps seem to be settling down a bit now, as 4 players improved theirs, while 3 went up a stroke. This makes for some interesting match setups for next week, as Marty and Mark go head-to-head, as do Dave and Tim, in one of our two “family matches”; the other being Bette and Tom. I’ll be there for a ringside view of that one 😊
In this week’s featured matchup, aka “The Battle of the Susans”, it was Sue taking top points for the night, prevailing 6 ½ - 2 ½ over Susan. Tied after the first 3 holes, Sue then went on a 5-1 run to close out the match. Both players shot well, as Sue had no double-digit holes and Susan just one at the last. Well done ladies!
In our only heads-up match of the night, it was a back-and-forth matchup thru the first 6 holes, but then Steve put on a strong finish to defeat Tim 6-3.
Four matches ended 5 ½ - 3 ½, including another featured match-up of veteran Hackers Dave and Tommy. It was looking to be a close one, as they were all tied up through 7 holes, but Dave finished par-bogey to hand Tom his first loss of the season, and take low net honors on the night! Nice round Dave! Watch out Tim!
Jim returned to solid play after a couple struggling weeks. He jumped out to an early 3 point lead though 5, but Pete was not to be deterred as he fought back, taking the next 2 holes (there was some discussion of withholding future perogies that might’ve thrown Jim temporarily off his game). Jim quickly overcame the threat, taking the last hole to assure the win. No perogies for you!
Bette took the lead at the 2nd hole against Mark, and never gave it back on the way to her 5 ½-3 ½ win. An excellent round for her despite the blemish at the final hole. Speaking of the final hole, as a group we seemed to struggle at the finish, averaging 2 ¼ strokes over par, with just 2 players (Mark and Andy) making par.
Brian pulled double-duty tonight, resulting in a split-decision. As a card match affecting Dan R., he prevailed 5 ½ - 3 ½ , while dropping his actual match against Marty, in a nail-biter that was tied 3 times, including coming to the final hole. In the end, Marty did as Marty does, finishing off the match 5-4. Both players shot better their handicaps, to finish with sub-par nets of 33 and 34. Nice round!
The final 5-4 match went to Dan, jumping out to an early lead over Andy, who managed to tie the match only once, at the 4th hole (it took a birdie to even do THAT). After than it was all Dan, as he out-scrambled Andy to take the win. Nice match Dan!
Tom and Brian retained their #1 and #2 spots in the standings, while Mark, Andy and Marty consolidated their respective 3rd, 4th, and 5th place standings into a tie for 3rd.
Marty is now the only undefeated player, and he and Mark are still in the running for the “No Others” title. Vegas odds-maker may have to reconsider again. Place your bets early 😊
Dan held on to the top spot, while Brian and Andy each moved up 1 spot, from 3rd and 4th, to 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Jim jumped up from 8th place, into 4th, as Mark fell from 2nd to 5th, with perennial Hacker Cup contender Tommy dropping out of the top 5.
