GE Hackers Annual Father’s Day Outing

June 18, 2023

What a great day for golf! Incredibly, the rain clouds that appeared to threaten during the 2nd half of the round held off dropping anything on us until the last group was packing up their stuff.  Even then, it was just a brief misting. Aside from a momentary lapse in golf cart driving skills on my part, and the need for the make-shift MoneyBalls for the drawing, I believe the rest of the event went off without a hitch.  Apparently, I have been spoiled by the reverse camera in my truck, which was sadly lacking in the golf cart. Needless to say, I won’t make the mistake of backing up a cart without making sure there are no bunkers (or other hazards for that matter) behind me. Although, it may be that the adrenaline rush caused by the incident contributed to the birdie I made on the hole in question…

Anyway, enough about my foibles. Let’s look at the golf itself. Starting with the resulting handicaps derived via the Peoria Method, even with a relatively small sampling of numbers (16 player scores), I think the results were pretty fair in this case.  I base this solely on the fact that both the AVERAGE (mean) and MEDIAN net scores are the same and are each just 2-strokes over par at 73.  I am NOT a “statistician”, so it is possible this is a false interpretation of fairness, but it looks good to me 😊.  When comparing the calculated handicaps to simply doubling our league handicaps, the differences ranged from 12 more for Dave, to 8 less for Bob.  Dave, whose doubled league HCP would’ve been 20 as compared to the 32 he received via Peoria.  His net score of 73, hit the mean/median number on-the-nose, leading me to believe the 32 is an accurate handicap for him at Capital Hills. Bob, on the other hand, was somewhat of an outlier, as he could’ve used those 8 strokes to get to a net 72.  I can only assume Bob was having a tough round.  It happens.

In the team competition it was the team of Mark, Jim, Bob T and Kieran with the most points, 23, for the win! Second place went to the team of Brian, Dave, Tim and Gloria, with 20 points. Third place went to the team of Andy, Steven, Joe and Bob M with 19 points, with the team of Dan F, Dan R, Tom and Bette bringing up the rear with 14 points.

Just for grins and giggles, I reversed the order of each team’s players to see what, if any, difference there might be in the results if the player/hole selection was different. Andy’s team score would’ve gone down 1 point. Mark’s team would’ve gone down 2 points. Brian’s team would’ve remained the same. Dan’s team would’ve gone up 7 points! Make what you will of the strategy required to put the right player on the right group of holes.

For individual results, not surprisingly, Mark and Jim had the 2 best gross scores of the day, with a real nice 78 for Mark, and 83 for Jim.  Brian and Andy tied for 3rd with 85s, while Joe rounded out the sub-90 scores, with a double-snowman 88 😊

Net scoring saw Jim and Tim leading the way with 65, followed by Mark with 68, and Gloria with the only remaining sub-par net of 69.

It appears there is somewhat of a relationship between net score and Stableford points, as these same 4 players led in the Points category as well, in the same order, with the only totals 20 and above.  Jim and Tim with 24 each, Mark with 21 and Gloria with 20.

There was a total of 5 birdies on the course.  Brian had 2, one on the 5th hole and another on the 11th hole.  Nice job Brian!  Andy had one on the 3rd hole. Joe had one from about 7 feet on the only par 3 that was not a CTP hole (#7). On the same hole, our youngest player, Kieran, rounded out the birdie-makers, knocking it in from the hill just above the hole.  Nice shot Kieran!

Mark played the most consistent “good” golf, with 11 pars and 7 bogeys on his way to that 78. Excellent round Mark!

I apologize for this next part, but it seems that somewhere between the course and home I lost some of the CTP tags. If anyone remembers what distances I reported at the time, please let me know, and I will update this section.
