Hacker Cup

Congratulations BRIAN!

This is only the second time in the history of the Hacker Cup that a player has won this while missing the final week of the play-offs. Such was the extent of the lead Brian held here.  Great season Brian!

Congratulations to Andy! Following a 14-year drought peppered with 2nds and 3rds, finally a second career win! 😊  with just 3 losses (Mark, Tim and Bette) and 1 tie (Dan P), finishing up with a (.767). Dan Fusco finished up in 2nd place with a 6-4-3 record (.577). In his Hacker League debut, Dan Palmerino was next up with a record of 9-4-1 (.679), which garnered him the 3rd place tie with Jim, who ended with a record of 7-6-2 for a (.533)

Mark did it again! Another full season with no “others”. This year, in addition to once again, repeating as the leader in the fewest average double-bogeys, and most average pars, he also led in the average birdie category. Way to go Mark!

The expected drama in the final group seemed to fizzle in the rain, as Bette held Dan Fusco to just 2 points in the lop-sided victory. Meanwhile, Andy and Jim, both struggling to score well, managed to tie 6 holes, with Andy taking the remaining 3 holes to virtually lock-up the season victory with the 6-3 win.

In his final sub-session of the season, Glenn handed Dave a tough 7-2 loss, taking the lead at the 2nd hole and never looking back.  Nice round Glenn, and thanks again for filling in as often as you did this year! Hope to see you back in action with us next year!

Bob was pulling double-duty against Team Michalski, and he proved to be too much for both of them, as he won his match with Pete 5-4 and held Sue to just 2 points in their card match. Nice end to the season Bob!

In perhaps the most contentious match of the night, Dan Palmerino took the first hole, but Tim came right back to win the 2nd, squaring up the match and keeping it there for the next 3 holes. Tim took 3 of the remaining 4 holes for the 5 ½ - 3 ½ win.  There was also a rules situation in this match, occurring at the 5th hole. A post-round determination changed the score here from a hole-win for Tim, to a tie. The ruling centered on a ball of Dan’s embedded in the wall face of the first fairway bunker. During play, the ball was lifted, played from a drop position inside the bunker and a 1 stroke penalty assessed.

The rule(s) governing embedded balls is/are complicated and much depends on WHERE the ball is embedded.  Had it been embedded in the sand, there is NO relief, and the ball must be played as it lies. The player may, however, opt to declare the plugged ball unplayable and take a drop in the bunker with a 1-stroke penalty assessed.

In this case the ball was NOT embedded in the sand, but was in the wall of the bunker, which, according to the rules, is part of the “general area” of the course (fairway, rough, etc…).  As such, free relief from the embedded situation is allowed. This relief is to be taken in the same “general area”, in other words NOT in the bunker.  The drop is made regardless of how far the player needs to move the ball in order to make the drop, both closest to the where it was embedded, and also no nearer the hole.

Technically, the drop was taken in the wrong location, and then played from the wrong location, however, it was taken in good faith and agreed to amongst the players involved, so, no penalty stroke was added.  Once again, “if you want to play the game, you’ve got to know the rules” (or carry a rules official around in your back pocket 😊)

The remaining two matches ended in ties.  Starting with Mark vs Tommy, Tom jumped out to, and held the lead till the last hole, where the night’s only birdie (by Mark) brought the match back to all square. Nice match gents!

Last, but not least, Gloria ran up an early 3-up lead through 4 holes. Marty then took the next 3 holes to bring the match back to all-square, where it remained to the end as they split the final 2 holes.  Well fought folks!

NEW for 2023

Knockout Champion

Nine players were knocked out here at the 1st hole, leading to the lowest top-point score of the season, as Bob outlasted the remaining 4 players, taking 3 points after 4 holes.

Following a discussion about the current scoring method, I am going to revamp the weekly scores to be similar to how we do the Hacker Cup, by assigning top points to the best finisher, and working backwards, lowering the points accordingly.  This will likely affect the season average for each player, as these numbers are currently somewhat skewed by weeks that finish with higher, or lower scores than others.  I will work on this for this season, and announce when it is complete.  For now, Dan Fusco can bask in the temporary glow of having the best average based on the current scoring method!

No winner tonight. There will be carry-over to the banquet night scramble, since everyone is hitting a tee shot of each hole.
