Respect to those who walked last night, and extra respect to Brian and Glenn who not only walked but carried too! It was extra soupy out there, but at least there was no threat of storms, allowing all to focus on the golf. The banquet discussion continues, and rather than talk about it here, I’ll leave that to the email threads going around. Special thanks to Sue for taking the reins in coming up with potential venues for discussion!
We had one rules question in the final group match between Brian and Tom. After reviewing USGA rules as best as I can (those things can be hard to follow in some cases) I’ve determined that Brian DID incur a penalty-stroke on the 7th hole when he accidentally hit his ball in the rough during a practice swing (not on the tee box). As his ball was in play, the penalty is for violating Rule 9.4 moving a ball that is in play. Brian correctly replaced his ball and played from the original location, incurring a 1-stroke penalty. Had he not done that and had played from where the ball ended up after the unintentional hit, it would’ve been a 2-stroke penalty under Rule 14.7, playing from the wrong location. As they say, “if you want to play the game, you’ve got to know the rules…” The result was a ½ point change in the match score (see results below).
This week’s play saw 7 players maintain their handicaps, 7 players improve, and just 1 player go up a bit.
Now for the matches.
Tim was the big winner on the night, firing a net 2-under handicap round against Dan Fusco who struggled a bit (heat maybe?). Tim allowed just 1 full point, and a ½ for the 7 ½ - 1 ½ wire-to-wire win. He was also pulling double-duty, as a card match to Mark, holding Mark to just 2 points. Unfortunately for Mark, it seems like he brings out the best in some people! Nice round Tim!
In one of this week’s featured matchups pitting veteran Hackers Dave and Bob against one-another, it was all Dave as he prevailed over Bob, who has been running on a cold-streak the last few weeks. With Dave playing 2-strokes better than his handicap, Bob could only manage 2 points against him. Nice round Scoop!
In the couples matchup, it was Team Palmerino over Team Michalski, with Dan defeating Sue 6 ½ - 2 ½ in a match with 5 tied holes through the first 6. Way to hold your own Sue! Lisa’s 5-4 win over Pete was more of a back-and-forth tussle, with 7 lead changes and the match all-square coming to the final hole. Pete had a rough go of it at the end, giving Lisa the win, with a 1-over-net score. Nice round Lisa!
Next up we had a wire-to-wire 6-3 win for Bette over Jim (who may or may not have been still recovering from some unknown ailment😊). Sick or not, it would’ve been tough to beat Bette when she fires a 4-under net! Excellent round Bette!
The match between Andy and Glenn was a close one. It was all-square 4 times during the round. Glenn had a shot at tying the match with a win at the final hole but fell just short, giving Andy the 5 ½ - 3 ½ win. Nice round Glenn!
Our final match featuring a heads-up contest between Tom and Brian was full of drama. In addition to the ruling question mentioned earlier, both players shot below net par, as Tommy kept pace with Brian throughout, squaring the match 4 times, including going into the final hole, before finally succumbing to Brian’s stellar play, including 4 pars. Kudos to you both for a great round!
Thanks to Glenn and Lisa for taking on the heat and subbing this week!
Mark is now just 3 rounds away from another full season with no others. No pressure 😊
Andy overtook Dan Fusco to take a ½ point lead. Dan Palmerino edged ahead of Jim into 3rd place, while Dave, Tim and Gloria are knotted in a tie for 5th. The volatility here continues…
With week #1 of the playoffs in-the-books, number one seed Dan Palmerino remains at the top, followed by Brian, moving up from 13th place to 2nd by virtue of top honors with his net 29! Bette also made a big move up, from 11th to 3rd. Dan Fusco and Jim fell from 2nd and 3rd into 4th and 5th. Meanwhile, Dave and Andy dropped out of the top 5.
As a reminder of how the play-off scoring works. Each player starts with a set number of points, depending on their seed location. Each week, points are scored and accumulated exactly the same as they are during the regular season. The lowest of the 4-weeks of points will be thrown out. The player with the highest number of points using their seed points and the best 3 scores from the playoff weeks, will win the Hacker Cup, and have their name engraved thereon for perpetuity (or, until we run out of room for names 😊).

NEW for 2023
Knockout Champion
Dan Fusco still has what seems to be an insurmountable season lead here. For the current week though, it is Tom who will take over the honor of glove bearer for the next round, as he survived everyone else through to the 7th hole, for 6 points on the week. The only question is: Who has the gloves? Jim? Dan P? Tom is very sensitive about this since he was not provided with the gloves the last time he prevailed, so, I will be certain to bring the extra pair with me, just in case. |
It was a rare birdie-less round, as no one seemed to be able to make that 1-under score. Mark still leads in the birdie category, averaging 1 birdie every-other round.
It was Jim this week, coming just inside the 25’ mark, as the Daviero-Fusco-Palmerino
clan has now claimed 6 of the 8 CTP wins this season! Well done Jim!
